The initial brainstorm of Metrix
The Metrix Asset Management system stemmed from the frustrations expressed by customers. We discussed feedback about the limitations of existing ‘traditional’ systems available in the market, including:-
- Disparities between isolated (and often proprietary) data silos from asset management systems, GIS datasets, capital valuation registers, and defect management systems.
- Inability to export reliable and repeatable data.
- Frustration over systems with mandated data management practices – i.e. confining and/or cumbersome hierarchy structures, restrictive (or no) spatial representation, and meaningless componentisation.
- Frivolous additional fees for new modules or features – sometimes even in the face of regulatory compliance.
- Departments of the same organisation ‘working against each other’ because they were using different systems and each were having to change their practices to suit these systems.
- Slow or complex implementation times
- Lack of information coming in from field teams in some cases because technology design is not intuitive

The team behind Metrix Assets
Matt Robinson and Chris Milne, from Chartis Technology, sparked the original idea for Metrix Assets and pursued many hours of Research and Development with customers and others in the industry. As the project evolved, Nathan Woodrow was brought on to formulate the concept into a standalone product.
Matt brings a wealth of experience in spatial data management and local government data management practices. He leverages these strengths to advise customers on how to use Metrix to best suit their individual internal needs and processes. With his extensive background, Matt ensures that Metrix is tailored to provide optimal solutions for diverse customer requirements.
Chris previously worked in the local government asset management industry in roles that required bridging data needs between finance teams, engineering teams, compliance teams, as well as community engagement teams. His ability to connect these diverse functional areas has been instrumental in shaping Metrix into a comprehensive and adaptable asset management tool.
Nathan, who also originates from the local government asset management industry, transitioned into the spatial software development field. His expertise has been critical in advancing Metrix, and his significant contributions to the open-source QGIS project highlight his commitment to innovation and community-driven development.
Together, this team along with others have combined their unique skills and experiences to create a robust and versatile asset management system that addresses the complex needs of local governments and other organisations.
